MCT Oil vs C8

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are unique fats that are processed differently than the normal long-chain triglycerides in a conventional diet.

Long-chain triglycerides are broken down in the body by the gall bladder and enzymes in the pancreas before they are available to be converted to energy.

Medium-chain triglycerides are easier for the body to process, passing directly through the intestinal wall and then converted to ketones in the liver.

They are less likely to be stored as body fat, and boost metabolism and overall energy.

MCT oil is a useful supplement to reach the health state of ketosis.

Ketoers include MCT oils in their diet to achieve and maintain the state of ketosis necessary to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of a ketogenic diet.

By consuming MCT oils, the body has more energy and endurance, mental clarity and focus is increased, and the body is better able to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

All MCT's are valuable, but they are not all created equal.

Triglycerides are measured by the length of their carbon chain.

Long-chain fatty acids usually have 12 to 18 carbon atoms, while medium-chain fatty acids have 6 to 10.

The shorter the carbon chain, the easier the fat is for the body to process and make available to burn as energy. For that reason, a C6 oil should be desirable and healthy, but there is not currently a commercially available supplement of C6 MCTs.

C8 is the lowest carbon chain triglyceride that we are currently able to isolate in quantities sufficient to market. Pure 8-carbon or C8 MCT is also known as caprylic acid, and the terms are used interchangeably.

C8 MCT oils can be used in a variety of ways. Many Ketoers add it to their morning coffee, for sustained energy all the way until lunchtime.

They can also be blended into shakes and smoothies, stirred into yogurt, or used like conventional oil in salad dressings and sauces.

Keto - Change your fuel

Pure 8-carbon oil is the most effective of the MCT oils, but also the most expensive. If you are looking for a more affordable option, check out our review of C8 and C10 blends.

If you are still here, you are most likely wandering:

"Which C8 MCT oil supplement is best for me?"

That depends on your needs and your pocket. Check out the comparison chart above...

How to Choose the Best C8 Supplement

When looking for a C8 MCT Oil supplement, it's important to read the ingredients carefully.

Just because a product is pure MCT oil does not mean it's made only with 8 carbon atoms.

Some MCT oils include other ingredients or additives that have carbohydrates. That doesn't mean they are bad products, and you can still enjoy the benefits of MCT oil.

But if you are looking for a C8 supplement to complement a keto lifestyle, it's important to read the label.

Remember that not all MCT oils are C8 MCT oils. Most are a blend of C8 and C10.

The best C8 MCT supplements are made from coconut and/or palm oils and nothing else.

Some products may have additional healthy ingredients that might appeal to or benefit you, enhancing the blend in other ways, but for the purposes of this review, we focus on pure C8 MCT oils.

What to Look for in a Good C8 MCT Oil

The best C8 MCT oils are organic, sustainable, responsibly sourced, and responsibly packaged.

Not every product will meet all these criteria, but it's good to keep in mind when comparing products.

Note on palm oil: palm oil is healthy and natural, and a good source of C8 MCTs.

However, the way in which it is currently produced and harvested has had a devastating environmental impact on many regions of the world, leading to widespread deforestation and threatening many species.

While there is a movement underway to reform the industry to be more responsible, there are not yet widespread good practices in place for conscious, sustainable palm oil harvesting.

For that reason, many companies choose not to use it in their MCT oil products.

If these issues are important to you, you may choose to avoid palm oil as well, or be attentive to whether the palm oil source is certified sustainable.

A good MCT C8 oil will be more pricey than a blend. It will convert into energy faster and is the most effective of the MCT oils.

It is important to take them regularly, so price is of concern, then consider this well priced blend.

Conclusion

As we have seen, there are a wide variety of C8 MCT oils available on the marketplace, and many of them are products with pure ingredients and free shipping.

Furthermore, on a per-serving basis, many of them are in a very similar price range.

All of them include the benefits of daily, ongoing use of MCT C8 oils, including greater mental clarity and focus, sustained energy and suppressed appetite, enhanced metabolism, and decreased body fat storage.

These oils are beneficial for everyone, even if they don't adopt other elements of the keto lifestyle.

So, you have a variety of products to choose from, and the ultimate decision may come down to factors like company reputation, ingredient sourcing, or transparency and communication.

Other factors may play a role as well, like simple matters of taste and preference. One may have better packaging, or a flavor or texture that you prefer, or be easier to pour or more convenient to order.

Ultimately, there is no single best C8 MCT oil supplement for everyone.

What matters most is that you choose the products you like best, and enjoy all the physical and mental benefits of the keto lifestyle.

At this time, my choice is Brain Octane Oil, even though it is the most pricey.

However, I don't use it every day. Some days I add coconut oil to my coffee and other days a C8 and C10 blend.

This may not necessarily be the most effective use of these oils, but it works for me and I don't like to do the same thing every day. 🙂

John - March 12, 2018

Your bulletproof link goes to their XCT oil, which is NOT all c8. It does not link to the brain octane product which is c8 but also double the price.

    Noline - March 22, 2018

Hey John, thank you for bringing the incorrect link to my attention. I fixed it.

I agree it is expensive. That is why it is my first choice based on brand reputation, but based on value for money my favorite is the KetoMCT C8 oil.

I really appreciate that you took the time to let me know about the link.

    Keep well, Noline
